Unit 1: Whole Number Review Intro

Many people take whole number skills for granted. They assume that “everyone already knows” these skills and that they are “easy” to recall and use.  This unit is included in this text to provide a review of known skills and to introduce math in the context of health professions.  You need to understand the importance of having a math skill set that is somewhat automatic, and also that whole number skills will help them detect when some number or amount is out of place or incorrect. This skill set will increase common sense in math and help promote critical thinking skills. In addition, this unit covers how to work with Roman numerals, standard time versus military time, and mean, median, mode, and range. Whole numbers form the basis of all we do in math, and practice and diligence will pay. Today more than ever, people do not practice mental math. Maybe you do not have a strong grasp on borrowing in subtraction, multiplication facts, or number divisibility and factoring. We will refresh and learn these skills in this unit.

Unit 1 Learning Objectives:

  • Identify Roman Numerals
  • Read and write whole numbers
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers
