Unit 3: Adding Decimals

To add decimals, first line up the decimal points and then add. This might mean that a problem presented in a horizontal pattern needs to be rewritten in a vertical pattern.

     A whole number always has a decimal point to the right side of the final number: 56 = 56.0

3.42 + 0.13 = ?  --->   3.42

                                + 0.13

                                  3.55

46 + 1.85 = ____ --->   46.00    <--- Place a decimal point and fill the empty spaces with zeroes.

                                  + 01.85

                                   47.85

Lining up the decimals is the first step in ensuring the correct answer for the addition of decimals.

2.36 + 0.007 + 1.4 = _____   --->    2.360            Fill the empty spaces with zeros.

                                                        0.007

                                                     + 1.400

                                                        3.767

Step 1: Line up the decimals. The order of the numbers to be added is not important.

Step 2: Add the numbers and bring the decimal point straight down.

Complete the following practice problems:

1. 0.9 + 36 +1.25 =

2. 15.2 + 17.071 + 0.74 =

3. 0.11 + 86 + 0.125 =

4. 10.79 + 0.99 + 0.25 =

5. 0.0096 + 50.24 + 39 =

6. 0.849 + 1.6 + 56.3 =

7. 14.28 + 16.24 + 97

8. 0.75 + 23.87 + 124.07

9. A 25-year-old patient receives the following medication dosages daily: 1.5 milligrams, 2.25 milligrams and 0.75 milligrams. What is his total dosage?

10. A child weighs 15.9 kilograms. The child has gained 0.9 and 1.5 kilograms during the past two months. What is the child's current weight in kilograms?
