Using a mnemonic device helps keep the metric units in the correct sequence or order. Try something silly like "kiss hairy dogs but drink chocolate milk, mom." Knowing a device like this will help you remember the order of the units on an exam or quiz. Note that in the above picture, the "mo" in "mom" are placeholders. This helps one remember to count those two blank spaces in the mnemonic device.

To change units within the metric system, the numbers' place value from the decimals unit and then consider where you are converting to. Count the number of spaces from the number you are starting with and the place you are converting to.

Example. 45.5 grams = x milligrams?

Using the letters from the previous chart, one can gauge where to begin as "gram" is the "base".

Using the above chart, you would move three places from the right of "base" or "b" to get to "milli" or "milligrams". However many places you move along the line, you will move the decimal the same amount of spaces and in the same direction.

So, 45.5 grams = 45,500 milligrams

Practice the following problems. Try to use the k h d b d c m m o m acronym. It is important to memorize what each letter stands for.
