Unit 3: Temperature Conversion

(C= Celsius and F= Fahrenheit)

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit-     (C x 1.8) + 32 = F

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius-   (F - 32) \div÷1.8 = C

Example:

Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit:

41 C = ________ F

Step 1: Solve inside the parentheses first, and then work left to right. Multiply the Celsius temperature by 1.8. The number 1.8 is the decimal form of \frac{9}{5}95

   41

x 1.8

  328

    41

    73.8

Step 2: Add 32 to the step 1 answer.

    73.8

  + 32

105.8

The answer is 105.8 degrees F.

To convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius:

Step 1: Subtract the 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature:

107.6

  - 32

    75.6

Step 2: Divide the step 1 answer by 1.8

75.6 \div÷1.8 = 42

The answer is 42 degrees C.

Complete the following practice problems:

1. 34^\circ C = ________ F^\circ

2. 46.6 ^\circF = _________ ^\circC

3. 107^\circC = _______^\circ F

4. 101.5^\circF = ______^\circC

5. 42^\circC = ______ F^\circ

6. 40^\circF = _______^\circC

7. 100.4^\circF = ______^\circC

8. 69^\circC = _______^\circF

9. 12^\circC = _______ ^\circF

10. 105.8^\circ F = _____ ^\circC
