Unit 5: Percent to Decimal Conversion

PercentToDecimalOne540x403JPG.jpg

Converting a percent to a decimal involves very little math, but simply moving of the decimal point. Read the graphic above and then follow the example below:

To convert a percent to a decimal, shift the decimal point two places to the left. The process of doing this movement replaces having to divide the number by 100.

A whole number has it's decimal to the far right of the final digit.

125% = 125.0% ------------>    = 1.25

76% = 76.0% ------------>        = 0.76

Even if the decimal point has digits following it, it is still only moved two places to the left.

45.8% = 0.458

Now, try converting these practice problems from percents to decimals:

1. 45%                                                6. 702.3%

2. 57%                                                7. 14%

3. 78%                                                8. 82.1%

4. 101%                                              9. 31%

5. 44.5%                                            10. 99.9%
