Summarizing in Your Own Words

When you write a summary it is important to not copy from the original reading. You should rewrite the ideas in your own words.

Here are some suggestions to help you reword information from a sentence.

  • Change the order of the information in the sentence.
  • Repeat key words or phrases.
  • Use different words for the same idea.

Here is an example of how you might rewrite a sentence in your own words.

  • Original Sentence: It is essential to pay attention to you appearance when you go for a job interview.
  • Reworded Sentence: When you interview for a job, it is important that you think about what you wear, how you look and the way you present yourself.
