In this activity, students will read two paragraphs an answer questions about the paragraphs. Then they will write a summary of the paragraphs.

Write a summary of a text. This can help you better understand a text and remember the information you read. It can also help as you study for exams, write papers, and complete other assignments on the topic.

To complete this assignment:

        1. Read the lesson below. 
        2. Take the quiz.
        3. Answer the questions, and when you are finished, submit the quiz to send your answers to me.

 

Lesson

 

What is a summary? A good way to help you understand a summary is to imagine your friend had to miss class because they wee ill. The next day, they ask you to tell them about the lecture. What would you tell them? You would give him an overview of the main points of the lecture, but you wouldn't give them all the details. You would tell them briefly the most important things from the class to help them understand what they missed.
What is the purpose behind writing a summary?
  • It is good way to remember the information from a reading is to put the key ideas into your own words.
  • It will also help you confirm that you understood all the information and that your notes are complete.
  • The information from a summary can also be useful when studying for exams, writing essays, and completing other assignments assigned by your teacher on the topic.


What information do you include in a summary?
  • at the start the summary, include the title of the article and the name of the author (if you know the name. If not, just call them 'the author'.   (Ex. In the article 'Professional Email Etiquette', the author tells us...)
  • include the topic and main idea of the article
  • include any key or important details from the article 

What information do you not include in a summary?

  • your opinion (unless you instructor asks you to include this)
  • any new information not included in the original text
