General Overview
When can I start? Fall (September), Winter (January), or Spring (April)
How long is the program?
- 4 quarters (12 months) and 62 credits for certificate
- formerly 83 credits
- 6 quarters (up to 22 months) and 96 credits for the AAS degree
- formerly 96 credits
When do classes meet? Mondays to Fridays, from 8 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. on campus
Are summer classes required? No! There are no summer classes for this program.
Study machining processes and procedures, properties of metals, blueprint reading, applied math, and inspection techniques for a high-tech career in manufacturing. You learn how to operate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mills and lathes in our fully equipped machine shop.
What does a machinist do?
What is the average salary?
$62,520 annually Links to an external site. in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area. Most machinists earn at least $45,050; there is a wide salary range.

Overall Materials Needed:
- Access to a functioning laptop or computer (you may use computers in the RTC Library or Learning Resource Center)
- Working internet connection
- Textbooks (approximately $545; you use the same books for multiple classes)
- Office supplies ($30 for a calculator, three-ring binder, and paper)
Minimum GPA or grades to graduate
You need to earn a 2.0 in MTEC classes, WTD classes, and COL 101. You can earn a 1.0 or higher in the two general education classes for the AAS degree.
Materials Warning
Some materials on this page are listed as TBD, which means that the materials have yet to be determined. Please consult your instructor on what textbooks or materials are required for the class. If you rent a textbook, make sure you return it by the deadline. If you purchase a textbook, you can sell it back to the RTC bookstore -- but make sure that you won't need the book again for classes in the future!
