General Overview

When can I start? Fall (September) or Winter (January)

  • 2 quarters (6 months) for the Health Care Navigator Certificate (32 credits)
  • 4 quarters (11 months) for the Revenue Management Certificate (61 credits)
  • 6 to 7 quarters (18 to 21 months) for the Medical Coding Specialist AAS degree (94 credits)

When do classes meet? Classes are 100% online!

Medical office professionals are key members of the healthcare team. You will learn patient interviewing techniques, computer skills, medical terminology, and the complex language of billing and coding: ICD-10 CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS.

$59,580 annually Links to an external site. in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area. Most medical records specialists earn at least $46,290; there is a wide salary range.

Overall Materials Needed:

  1. Access to a functioning laptop or computer (you may use computers in the RTC Library or Learning Resource Center)
  2. USB drive (thumb drive)
  3. Working internet connection
  4. Textbooks and software ($940 for Health Care Navigator; $1,230 for Revenue Management Specialist; $1,415 for Medical Coding Specialist)

Minimum GPA or grades to graduate

You need to earn a 2.0 in each class to earn your certificate or degree.

If you rent a textbook, make sure you return it by the deadline. If you purchase a textbook, you can sell it back to the RTC bookstore -- but make sure that you won't need the book again for classes in the future!

In your simulation class, you use ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT codes on approximately 100 real medical records. Finally, your biology class reviews anatomical structures and the major body systems. Note: You can replace BIOL 105 with BIOL& 241.
