General Overview
When can I start? Fall (September), Winter (January), and Spring (April)
How long is the program?
- Students who started in winter 2025 or earlier: 6 quarters (17 months) with 78 total credits for the certificate and 93 total credits for the AAS degree
- Students who start in fall 2025: 5 quarters with 65 credits for the certificate and 6 quarters and 90 credits for the AAS degree
When do classes meet? Online and FLEX on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M. and every other Saturday (FLEX means you can attend in person or online!)
Are summer classes required? Yes. You cannot complete the certificate or degree without attending classes during summer quarter (July and early August).
Get ready to support the fast-paced, complex work in law firms, courts, government agencies, non-profits, and corporate legal departments. You will learn how to format legal documents like forms, briefs, filings, and correspondence; research case law; and prepare bills for clients. This program includes an internship.
Graduates of this program work as legal assistants, paralegals, legal receptionists, legal clerks, litigation practice assistants, and legal support professionals. Earning your AAS degree may mean that you qualify for more jobs.
What does a legal assistant do?
What is the average salary?
$74,010 annually Links to an external site. in the Seattle-Bellevue-Tacoma area. Most legal assistants earn at least $50,410; there is a wide salary range.

Overall Materials Needed:
- Access to a functioning laptop or computer (you may use computers in the RTC Library or Learning Resource Center)
- USB drive (thumb drive)
- Webcam
- Headset with microphone
- Working internet connection
- Textbooks and software ($1,000 estimated total, but some classes use the same books)
Minimum grades or GPA to graduate
You must earn a minimum 2.0 grade in all of your classes to earn your Legal Assistant certificate or degree.

Some materials on this page are listed as TBD, which means that the materials have yet to be determined. Please consult your instructor on what textbooks or materials are required for the class. If you rent a textbook, make sure you return it by the deadline. If you purchase a textbook, you can sell it back to the RTC bookstore -- but make sure that you won't need the book again for classes in the future!

Business Management Electives for AAS
You get to select 5 credits of electives for your AAS degree.
You can choose a class from any of the five General Education areas, or you can use one or more of the classes listed below from other programs in the Business Management area of study.
Accounting
All accounting classes are 5 credits each. Most have prerequisites.
