General Overview

When can I start? Fall (September), Winter (January), and Spring (April)

length of the program icon How long is the program?

  • Students who started in winter 2025 or earlier: 6 quarters (17 months) with 78 total credits for the certificate and 93 total credits for the AAS degree
  • Students who start in fall 2025: 5 quarters with 65 credits for the certificate and 6 quarters and 90 credits for the AAS degree

When do classes meet? Online and FLEX on Thursday evenings from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M.

Are summer classes required? Yes. You cannot complete the certificate or degree without attending classes during summer quarter (July and early August).

Get ready to support the fast-paced, complex work in law firms, courts, government agencies, non-profits, and corporate legal departments. You will learn how to format legal documents like forms, briefs, filings, and correspondence; research case law; and prepare bills for clients. This program includes an internship.

Graduates of this program work as legal assistants, paralegals, legal receptionists, legal clerks, litigation practice assistants, and legal support professionals. Earning your AAS degree may mean that you qualify for more jobs.

Overall Materials Needed:

  1. Access to a functioning laptop or computer (you may use computers in the RTC Library or Learning Resource Center)
  2. USB drive (thumb drive)

  6. Textbooks and software ($850 estimated total, but some classes use the same books)

Minimum grades or GPA to graduate

You must earn a minimum 2.0 grade in all of your classes to earn your Legal Assistant certificate or degree.

Some materials on this page are listed as TBD, which means that the materials have yet to be determined. Please consult your instructor on what textbooks or materials are required for the class. If you rent a textbook, make sure you return it by the deadline. If you purchase a textbook, you can sell it back to the RTC bookstore -- but make sure that you won't need the book again for classes in the future!
