Unit 3: Division of Decimals
Dividing decimals requires the same horizontal placement as previous decimal problems.
Step 1: Move the decimal point straight up to the same place in the quotient. Place the decimal point and then divide the numbers in the same fashion as if they were whole numbers.
Step 2: Divide, adding a zero in front of all decimal numbers that do not include a whole number.
6 goes in to 2 zero times, so a zero is placed at the first spot on the top line and we move to the next digit on the bottom line.
6 goes in to 25 (remember to ignore the decimal point) 4 times (24). Write a 4 above the line and subtract the answer out. This leaves remainder of 1.
6 goes in to 1 zero times, so we bring down the 8.
6 goes in to 18 3 times. Write the 3 above the 8 and subtract the answer out. This leaves us with a remainder of zero, so the equation is now complete.
Complete the following practice problems:
1. 11.97 ÷19 = 6. 68.4
÷4 =
2. 67.75 ÷5 = 7. 1,676.8
÷ 32 =
3. 0.464 ÷2 = 8. 51.17
÷17 =
4. 9.03 ÷21 = 9. 75.50
÷25 =
5. 1.44 ÷12= 10. 2,603.72
÷34 =
