General Overview

How long is the program? 1 quarter (6 to 12 weeks) with 17 total credits
When do classes meet?
- On-campus from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters
- On-campus from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday During Summer quarter
This program prepares you for national certification as a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist. Classes cover the history of phlebotomy; clinical laboratory settings; legal and ethical issues; infection control precaution and prevention; CPR and first aid; anatomy and physiology; medical terminology; body mechanics; various blood draw techniques; safety standards; complications of phlebotomy; and handling of non-blood specimens. As part of this program, you will take your Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam Links to an external site. and register for employment in the state of Washington.

- CastleBranch account ($106), which includes a national criminal background check
- Current physical examination and personal health insurance (cost varies)
- Textbooks and supply kits ($255)
- Red scrubs ($45 per set)
- Malpractice and liability insurance ($14.62)
Note: You must pass each class with a 2.7 or higher to earn your certificate.
Financial Aid Eligibility Warning
This specific program is not eligible for federal financial aid because it is less than one quarter long. Please talk to your adviser about different ways to pay for tuition.
Materials Warning
If you rent a textbook, make sure you return it by the deadline. If you purchase a textbook, you can sell it back to the RTC bookstore -- but make sure that you won't need the book again for classes in the future!
Required Classes
You will learn human anatomy and physiology and become familiar with health care settings, legal and ethical issues, HIPAA regulations, and safety precautions. You will choose appropriate blood collection tubes for tests, perform venipuncture procedures, and assess for complications for special procedures, such as ABO, B/C, GTT, and PKU, before starting your practicum clinical experience in a doctor's office or hospital.
