Faculty Information:I am a 40+ year veteran teacher, who has taught in both Oregon and Washington.  I am certified to teach in the areas of Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Applications for Business and Psychology.  I am National Board certified in Early Adolescent Mathematics (Gr 5 - 9).  I enjoy teaching this course as it is a chance to work with people who want to be teachers, and who are interested in the art and craft of teaching.

Course Description: The over-arching goals for this class are to introduce participants to a variety of classroom management and discipline styles and to guide prospective and new teachers in developing a positive classroom experience for students, teachers, and parents.  Participants will work on a long term project which will culminate in the development of a personal management outline for their future classrooms.

The class will be organized in 3 modules, around the 3 key components of Classroom Management:

Thoughtful Preparation - Significant Content & planning, 3 weeks

Effective Instruction- Engaging Delivery Methods, 3 weeks

Precise, Timely Interventions - Assessments of Behavior & Learning, 3 weeks

The 10th week of the course will be devoted to participant classroom management plan presentation and class discussion of works.  In order to be successful in this course, participants are expected to successfully complete 75% of all coursework and develop and  present the skeleton of a personal classroom management plan,  As this is a hybrid course, which meets once a week. To provide sufficient time for learning, there will be online tasks and assignments to prepare students for our face-to-face time.  Participants should expect a weekly investment of 2-3 hours of work outside of class sessions. DebPromo.png

Student Learning Outcomes are based, roughly, on state criteria for teacher evaluation (TPEP), newly adopted in the state of Washington.  Evaluation here is based on your DESCRIPTIONS related to these topics as you are not able to present in an actual classroom.  To prepare you for the development of this plan, class sessions will include lecture, video analysis of classrooms in action, on-line and face-to-face discussions, and sample lessons and tasks for data gathering.

THOUGHTFUL PREPARATION:
You will describe ways to foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment.  (Criterion #5)
Your work will address classroom arrangement, access and use of materials, time management techniques, and ways to develop norms for learning and to provide equity for all students.

(Criterion #4)You will provide clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum.  Your description will include techniques for joining previous lessons with the current one, how to align materials and tasks to match student ability, and the kinds of content preparation necessary before beginning a unit of study.

EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION

(Criterion #3) You will recognize individual students’ learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs.  You description in your classroom management plan will include techniques that can be used for scaffolding learning, differentiating instruction, and helping students take ownership of their own learning.

 PRECISE, TIMELY INTERVENTIONS

You will describe ways to foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment.  (Criterion #5) Your classroom management plan will include managing student behaviors.  This includes describing techniques for assessing students' learning and behavioral needs and providing interventions when needed.  You will describe your classroom's behavior plan, and compare yours to education experts such as Harry Wong, or management programs such as PBIS.
